Today is the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly. Yet even now, millions of people around the globe are deprived of basic rights.

“Millions of people are still trapped in structural poverty and go hungry every day. As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, let us remember that development should not be a privilege of the few, but a right for all,” says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

New York, December 4, 2008 –The United Nations Millennium Campaign welcomes the strong reaffirmation of support for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the recognition of the key linkage between MDGs and climate change, and the full endorsement of the Monterrey Consensus contained in the outcome document of the Financing for Development Conference in Doha last weekend. But the Campaign stresses that without urgent and specific plans, timelines and actions for the implementation of these agreements at the national level in each country, the conference will ultimately deliver very little for the world’s poorest.

New York, November 26, 2008 – The United Nations Millennium Campaign is calling for donor countries gathering at the Financing for Development Conference in Doha to commit to equitable trade rules and more effective aid that can help achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Poor countries in turn must focus on mobilizing domestic resources and enhance MDG-related public expenditures, as poor people brace themselves for the ripple effects of the global economic shock.

While the media confront us daily with yet more alarming news from financial markets, few people are aware of the international meeting taking place at the end of this month in Doha, not on the moribund Doha trade Round, but on Financing for Development— another likely victim of the present crisis, with grave repercussions on global poverty and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

CITIZENS DEMAND THAT WORLD LEADERS KEEP PROMISES TO ACHIEVE THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND END INEQUALITY

New York, 22 October 2008 – Anti-poverty campaigners today announced that more than 116 million people – nearly two percent of the world population – mobilized at events in 131 countries on October 17-19 as part of “Stand Up and Take Action.” The mobilization, which was ratified by Guinness as breaking the world record for the biggest mass mobilization on a single issue, sends a clear message to world leaders that citizens will not stay seated while promises to end poverty remain unfulfilled. At least 5 million additional people – many in Africa and Latin America— Stood Up at events not submitted before the Guinness deadline.
