El Giza, Egypt, March 14, 2025 – On a special Friday afternoon in El Gimiza, 15 young leaders from three base groups of YCW Egypt came together during Ramadan for a meaningful gathering. Joined by five dedicated adult collaborators, they shared a meal, reflected on their work, and deepened their commitment to the movement. This event was not just about breaking bread—it was about strengthening bonds, celebrating history, and planning for the future of young workers in Egypt.
Honoring 75 Years of YCW Egypt
This year marks the 75th anniversary of YCW Egypt, which was founded in 1950. During the gathering, former members took the time to share the rich history of the movement, its impact on their lives, and the importance of collective action. They emphasized the values of solidarity and empowerment—principles that continue to guide young workers today. As Egypt prepares to celebrate this milestone, the gathering served as a powerful reminder of the movement’s enduring legacy.
Empowering Young Workers: The Work of the Three Base Groups
The young leaders from the three base groups shared updates on their ongoing work, each focused on tackling different challenges and building a better future for themselves and their communities.
Creation Group: This group meets regularly to engage in Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) projects, particularly embroidering cotton bags. Beyond their craftsmanship, they also discuss their daily realities, struggles in education, and their need to strengthen their capacities through English courses. As Shaimaa, a passionate young member, shared: “Through our action in embroidery, I discovered how beautiful life is. Now I am passionate about further developing my ability to learn how to sew, and I want to turn an ordinary t-shirt into art.”
El Khouranfish Group: This group is actively engaged in raising awareness and discussing their realities as young workers. In addition, they are taking steps to equip themselves with essential first-aid training, ensuring they can respond to emergencies in their workplaces and communities.
El Osirin Group: Although their meetings are less frequent, this group focuses on reviewing their realities and challenges in life and work, fostering a space for young workers to express their struggles and find collective solutions.
A Bridge Between Past, Present, and Future
During the gathering, the young leaders also learned more about the upcoming IYCW Centenary Celebration in Belgium. They collected testimonies from members to share on the international stage, reinforcing the connection between their local struggles and the global fight for young workers' rights.
Former members also emphasized the importance of the Review of Life and Worker Action (ROLWA), which has played a vital role in helping young people analyze their realities, take action, and create meaningful change in their lives and communities.
Looking Ahead
As YCW Egypt moves forward, the young leaders have already started planning future meetings and initiatives to expand their impact. The 75th anniversary will be an opportunity to celebrate their achievements, strengthen their organization, and ensure that young workers in Egypt continue to have a voice.
YCW Egypt’s gathering was more than just an event—it was a testament to the resilience, creativity, and determination of young workers who believe in solidarity, empowerment, and action. As they continue their journey, their voices will inspire others, ensuring that the movement remains a beacon of hope for generations to come.
