The IYCW greets all the social organizations and movements, trade unions, and governmental institutions present here today. This meeting represents a unique opportunity for society as a whole, and especially for people in situations of migration or exile.
To migrate is also to dream. It is to promote the encounter and dialogue between cultures, the sharing of knowledge, and to contribute to the development of territories. The current context is, however, extremely unfavorable to the peoples of the world, and even more so to young workers on the move.
We would like to share with you the testimony of a young worker:
“My name is Juan, I come from Colombia, I am 20 years old, and I live in Valladolid, Spain. I work as a parcel delivery worker. I came here looking for an opportunity, hoping to change my life. However, precariousness marks my daily life. I work long days, without a contract, without insurance, without labor rights. If I complain, they tell me there are others willing to do it for less. There are many of us, young migrants, working without a contract, sustaining economies without our efforts being recognized. I have suffered several assaults while working. And I can say that it is not only about racism, but also a way of maintaining a system where some have rights and others do not.”
Juan’s story and experience are repeated for millions of young people throughout Latin America, Europe, and beyond.
Now more than ever, the CELAC–EU Summit 2025 must serve as a space to advance concrete proposals in favor of the working class, especially young migrant workers.
Everything must be done so that Juan’s dream — which is also the dream of millions of others — can become a reality:
“My dream is simple: to be able to work legally, to do things right, to study, and to achieve what I have always wanted to do.”
Let us continue to fight together to make this utopia a reality.
The IYCW considers it essential that states acknowledge the complex nature of migration and work towards public policies that protect migrants and recognize their valuable contributions across many sectors of society.
They should also strengthen their commitment to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. Together, we can ensure that migration is managed in ways that uphold human rights and enhance the well-being of migrants and their communities.
The IYCW advocates equal access to education, employment, and social support for all young people regardless of their origin.
We defend the rights of migrants, their access to essential services and support, and raise awareness about the challenges they face.
Let us celebrate the daily contributions of migrants to our communities. Their resilience, skills, and cultural diversity greatly enrich our societies.
